Egeværk exhibition at Bornholm, Denmark, all summer of 2023.

PRESENT

April 1 – October 22, 2023

Egeværk – Mette Bentzen and Lasse Kristensen – have struggled with ambivalent feelings towards their shared professional origins over the past decade. Both furniture makers are steeped in the Danish furniture tradition, especially Hans J. Wegner’s legacy. They also both possess creative wanderlust and the urge to challenge convention.

Shelves melt like walls of ice, giant jellyfish become armchairs, deconstructed tree trunks hang from the ceiling. Is everything chaos and collapse or are we in the midst of nature’s most beautiful order?

PRESENT presents a series of unique works from Egeværk’s universe with particular inspiration from the nature of Bornholm. The nature here is vital and intense; the forests seem deeper and the arc of the sky is higher than elsewhere. The summer cornfields are miraculous. Seabirds care for their offspring among jagged cliffs. Wondrous places are described with alluring words: høl, viske, kås, kløve, myr …

Since 2011, award-winning Egeværk has worked to combine the love of wood and good craftsmanship with great ambitions to challenge the status quo in the Danish furniture tradition. They have found their niche in the collectible design category, in which Egeværk has established a strong Nordic name in the US and UK. Egeværk is represented by Sarah Myerscough Gallery, London, and HostlerBurrows, New York and Los Angeles, and their work is exhibited at Design Miami and FOG San Francisco, among others. Egeværk has a studio in Helsingør, and spends their free time on Bornholm.
